“Command Sgt. Maj. Martin “Gunny” Barreras died on May 13, 2014, of wounds he sustained during an attack on his unit on May 6, 2014. Barreras joined the Marine Corps in 1983 and the Army Rangers in 1988. He used CrossFit training was commonly used to improve fitness and health of the team.

One of the many movements that strike much stress into the gut of a CrossFitter as the thruster. It’s a term defined by CrossFit to describe the action of deep squatting with a barbell before standing upright and overhead pressing it in one fluid motion.

Named after Nicholas P Steinbacher, a US Army Specialist who died in Baghdad, Iraq, Nick is a moderately technical WOD that has a painfully high 12 rounds to finish. Dumbell hang squat cleans aren’t the toughest CrossFit workouts in the CrossFit repertoire but follow them up with handstand push-ups and suddenly things change quite dramatically.

The workout:

12 rounds

  • 10 reps,45 lb dumbbell hang squat clean
  • 6 handstand push-ups on dumbbells
